Don’t you look smug, momma?” My daughter—in—law kisses my cheek as she comes into the kitchen and straight for her coffee pot. She uses one of those stainless-steel stovetop percolators to make her signature espresso. She has always made it this way as she says it is the only way to drink real coffee. She makes a foam of it with sugar and the espresso but doesn’t drink it from dainty little cups. No, this child uses a full sixteen-ounce ceramic mug that says Allergic to pendejos! If it wasn’t in Spanish and bought by my Stuart for her, it would have been accidentally broken years ago.

“I should well say so.” I sip my tea while melting chocolate in a pot and watching the fry up. See, while little Bristol and Fanny are Spanish on their momma’s side, their daddy was Welsh and English on my side. Though I’ve only ever visited the countries in my youth, I loved the big hearty breakfasts. All the meats, eggs, scones, good strong teas. We’ve incorporated both family traditions into the big breakfasts when we are all together. Bianca makes the chorizo and churros sprinkled with sweet cinnamon sugar, these wonderful potato-filled omelets, and a few pastries I’ve never been able to pronounce.

“What have you done now?” She side-eyes me, grabbing her cup.

“Let’s just say that operation hang the Kandy Kane out of reach is being fully implemented today.”

“Mom?”

I just hum to myself. I have talked Koleman’s wife, Tammie, into taking the little bits to the chocolatier in town so they can get five dollar’s worth of penny candies each, then she can collect my specialty chocolate for tonight's fudge challenge. I know I’m technically supposed to be a judge, but damn it, I make the best tiger stripe fudge in six counties! I am not missing tomorrow’s swap!

“Momma make me one of those coffees of yours, please,” Bristol walks into the kitchen in Revan’s clothes again.

I smile. The progression from separate rooms to a new nursery is well underway. Little miss Ruellica’s prank is having very good results. I knew the items she left would deter my girl because she isn’t comfortable in her skin. She never has been, which is a shame because of my granddaughters—she is by far the prettiest. She doesn’t have the traditional Weststone shape of my mother or fair skin like Franny, which made her envious, and I am glad for it. She is anything but boring, and I always loved Revan for seeing that in her. Speaking of—

“Did someone forget their razor?” I quip, seeing the two—day growth on his chin as he rubs his face.

“I’m trying something.” He yawns. I had heard them last night with my Kandy Kane. Guess neither got much in the way of sleep.

“Try something else.”

“Grannie!” Bristol scolds. “Leave him alone. It makes him look mature.”

“You hear that, Rev? Matured.” Ruellica chortles. “She means old.”

“Like that white starting around your ears?” Bristol smiles at Rue.

“Those are the base for some rocking highlights.
